If you are like me, you desire a truly spiritual life. Life in this world as we know it is moving farther away from the spiritual to physical, and this has led to so much emptiness in the lives of many.
Stick with this post so I can give you the signs that you are living a spiritual life.
How exactly would I define a spiritual life?
It’s a life concerned with the spiritual as compared to the physical part of a person.
Maybe I’m still not clear on that.
Remember that man is a tri-part being. You ARE a spirit being, you HAVE a soul, you LIVE in a physical body.
So, essentially, you are a spirit, not a physical being. That means we must be working hard everyday to nurture and grow our spirits because that’s what we truly are, especially in full knowledge that a simple healthy lifestyle requires spirituality.
Are we doing that now?
Unfortunately, no. Most people have completely forgotten and many have never even acknowledged that they are spiritual beings and therefore fail to live a spiritual life.
Everything we do today is concerned with only the physical part of our existence. We do everything we can to take care of our physical bodies. Eating right, exercising, doing beauty treatments, and many of us going to great lengths to not let our physical bodies age.
Well, we might not reflect our true ages because we take care of ourselves. But we can never stop the hands of time. Just because you look 35 when you are 70 doesn’t make you 35, you are still 70.
Whether we like it or not, our physical bodies will die. But get this. Our spirits will never die. They will live for eternity.
It makes sense then that we should be taking care of that which is eternal. And we can set our spirits up for a lifetime of bliss and happiness by taking care of our spirits now while we are still alive in our physical bodies by making the right choices.
Maybe like me, that’s what you’re trying to do. So how will you know you are making progress at living a spiritual life?
Here are the signs you are living a spiritual life.
- Sign #1: You crave the word of God
The word of God is meant to feed your spirit. Every word in the bible is God-inspired and is meant to nourish the spirit.
You’ll know you are concerned with the spiritual life when you crave the word of God and feel empty and incomplete without it.
But you are not going to get there on your own. You are going to have to make an effort to get in the word for you to get to the point of craving it. You can’t crave what you never knew in the first place.

- Sign #2: Your prayers are less self-focused
When I prayed, it used to be all about me. God give me this and that, God do this and that for me.
I thought I was living the spiritual life just because I was praying. But it’s when you change your focus away from yourself to others that you begin to live a spiritual life.
God already knows what you need before you even ask him, so don’t worry about letting him know some things about your life because he already knows.
Instead, spend your prayer time praying for others around you and far away from you, whether you know them or not.
Now I spend less time talking about myself and more time praying for my family, our relatives and friends, our neighbors and their families, our young people, our country, our leaders, Africa, and the whole world.
I pray that God teaches us to help each other and put others’ needs before our own.
I thank God for the nature he’s given us. But I’m thinking now that I should start praying and asking him to teach us how to take care of that nature.

- Sign #3: You enjoy and appreciate nature more than you ever have in your life.
Nature used to be just something around us. I never paid much attention to it until I started nurturing my relationship with God.
Now I marvel at nature all the time. I marvel at the unmatched light of the distant moon, sun and stars.
I marvel at the trees that have probably been here long before I even came, giving me the oxygen that I breathe.
I marvel at the animals that, though have nothing, still manage to remain taken care of.
I marvel at the plants springing back to life after a long, dead and cold winter.
I keep thinking that’s how God designed human beings as well. The long, dead and cold winter of our lives would be our troubles and failures: divorces, homelessness, financial hardship, sickness and disease, etc.
But God meant for us to spring back to life replenished and new at the end of our troubles, because they will surely come to an end.
You’ll know you are living a spiritual life when you feel connected to nature. You feel part of it and know it’s incomplete without you, just as you are incomplete without it.
- Sign #4: You no longer care about what the world cares about
Fashion, all the empty entertainment, pleasing people. No, now that you are living a spiritual life you are concerned with only pleasing God, knowing if you please God, you please those who love God just like you do.
I no longer worry about what I have in my wardrobe or who’ll laugh at my outfit choice. Who’ll mock me because I’m not buying a car or a smartphone when everyone else. Who’ll mock me because I’m not on social media.
I no longer feel the need to compare myself to anyone. I now know no one on this earth is the standard, just as I’m not the standard. There’s only one standard and role model; and that’s Jesus Christ.

- Sign # 5: You are no longer scared of death.
Death used to scare me to death (pun!). Not only was I scared of dying. I was also scared of losing loved ones. Death scared me into so much anxiety that sometimes I’d wake up in the middle of the night panting.
That was before I learned and understood that death of the physical body means nothing because when that happens, the true me, which is the spirit remains alive for eternity.
Now, I’m no longer scared of parting with my physical body because it was just a borrowed suit to begin with.
Instead of worrying about death, I kind of look forward to being with my father when he calls me. And it’s freeing living with that much peace and calm.
The final word
The spiritual life was something meant for each and every one of us as children of God. It’s us who choose daily to separate ourselves from our true nature by honoring the physical rather than the spiritual.
But you no longer have to live this limited life you’ve been living. You can elevate yourself to the level God intended for you.
If you feel like you are already living a spiritual life, now isn’t the time to stop. Keep striving to reach unknown heights of this life by staying close to God.
