This is what you didn’t know about meditation

Meditation is one of those things everyone is talking about today. Some have gotten the hang of it, but there are some who are still struggling with really grasping what it means and how to go about doing it. Please continue reading this post if you have any questions about meditation.

A picture for what you didn't know about meditation

What comes to your mind when you hear the word meditation?

I’m sure what you see in the picture above is what you must think of when you hear the word meditation. You associate it with this foreign thing that you known nothing of, but you know will benefit you.

Well, you’ll be happy to know that true meditation doesn’t have all those embellishments you’ve seen. You do not have to pose like the people you’ve seen on TV and in pictures. What they are trying to do, what you should aim to do if you must, is settle into a comfortable position, in a place where you know you won’t be distracted. That’s all. It’s as simple as that.

(You’ll learn below that meditation can be a lot simpler than sitting down in a quiet place, so keep reading).

Now, I’ve heard some people say meditation is emptying the mind for a set time in order to quieten it. That doesn’t sound like the meditation I know of, or at least meditation according to the bible, which is the truest piece of writing in existence.

The bible talks about meditation. It says time and again that we are to meditate. But not just meditate, but meditate on the word of God. That means we are to ponder the word of God, think of it, run it over and over in our minds.

That is far from emptying our minds. As children of God, we get our peace from our father’s word, and therefore dwelling in it will give us exactly the kind of peace meditation is meant to achieve.

Remember that it’s not enough to just read the word. Reading the word and then putting aside your bible is not going to help you if you don’t think about what you just read.

And you don’t think about it for the five minutes after you finish reading the bible. No, you think about it over and over again for as long as you live. That’s the only way the word will change your way of thinking so you become more and more like God and access the blessings our father has made available to us, including the peace we are all after.

Now, you might not agree with me when I say, we all meditate every day. Every second of every day we are pondering stuff, mulling it over, chewing on it. Each and every one of us. That’s meditation.

But get this, it’s the negative form of meditation, the bad kind. So, the truth is, we all know how to meditate. We are just meditating on the wrong stuff.

Now, here is what I meant earlier when I said meditation requires no embellishments.

When you worry, and that’s meditation, you do it whenever and wherever you are. You could be sitting in front of the TV and worrying about paying your bills. Or you could worry about it as you drive to work. You could worry about it as you take a shower. You don’t have to be sitting down in a quiet place, humming, in order to meditate.

So it is with meditating on the word of God. You can think of your scriptures as you ride the bus to school or to work, as you go about your chores. Don’t think that you can only meditate if you are sitting alone in a quiet place. Well, that’s important too, if you can do it. But know that you can meditate at any time, in any place.

So, how do I move forward?

OK, now that you’ve taken comfort and confidence in knowing that you already know how to meditate, it’s time to think about what you’ve been meditating on. Decide if you want to keep meditating on that. If you’ve been meditating on fear, you know that kind of meditation has brought no peace to your days, so it’s time to change that.

Achieving the meditation you want is just a matter of changing what you meditate on from bad to good, from negative to positive. Begin to think about good things all the time. Think about the fact that you are still alive. That’s something worth meditating on.

Think about the people in your life. That’s another thing worth meditating on. Count your blessings and meditate on them. Meditate on God’s love for you. You’ll begin to see different results than what you’ve been seeing while you’ve been meditating on the wrong things.

  • You’ll reap joy as you realize you have a lot to be grateful for.
  • You’ll feel God’s love.
  • You’ll extend that love to those around you.
  • You’ll reap peace that no one can understand.

The final word

You no longer have to worry about meditation being a foreign thing for you. Now that you know you’ve been doing it all along, and are doing it now as we speak, you can have the confidence to continue with it, this time, meditating on the good things as opposed to the bad things you’ve been pondering all along.

Don’t worry about setting aside time to meditate. We all know trying to set time to do some things can backfire on us, especially in the early stages while we’re still trying to get used to them.

That’s why you must embed meditation in your everyday activities. Then as you get more and more used to it and you’re confident it has stuck as a habit, you can set a specific time and place to do your meditation.

Enjoying a simple healthy lifestyle requires exactly that. Embedding things like meditation and exercise into our everyday duties so that we do not have an opportunity to slack on them and use lack of time as an excuse.

Do it right now. As soon as you finish reading this post, begin meditating on the good things in your life. Meditate on God’s word and access the blessings he’s made available to us, blessings we can’t be aware of unless we read his word.

I felt like this post had to be written, and I feel fulfilled now that I’ve shared with you what meditation really is. I feel like most of us have been robbed of the benefits of meditation because we thought we didn’t know how to do it. And we even enrolled in classes to try to learn to do it.

Well, don’t worry about classes anymore. You have the best teacher: the holy spirit. He’ll teach you everything you need to know not only about meditation but about life as a whole.

Are you aware of God’s blessings for you?

Blessings. What a lovely word we all want to hear. But do you feel like you do not yet have God’s blessings? Maybe you look at everyone around you and think, “How come everyone else but me seems to be walking in God’s blessings?”

The most important thing to remember is that as a child of God, you have every right to have every blessing our father says you can have. Those blessings are there for your taking. Taking them for yourself is just a matter of stretching out your heart in faith and claiming what is rightfully yours.

A picture for God's blessings for you

God loves a humble heart, but I know of a lot of Christians who’ve been led to believe that we must live a life of lack if we are to prove our humility.  That’s how they mistakenly define humility. To them it’s passiveness and lack of action.

But that is not what humility in the biblical context means. Humility simply means the willingness to submit to God in every way possible. To count his ways more important than yours. To lean on his own understanding and not on your own. The bible clearly tells us to do this in:

Proverbs 3 v 5: With all your heart you must trust the LORD and not your own judgment. (CEV)

That’s humility. But it doesn’t in any way hint on being passive and doing nothing in matters of God. In fact passiveness and inactivity are the exact opposite of humility.

Now, with your humble heart, you can receive everything the father promises us in the pages of the Holy Bible.

There are many blessings God has made available for our taking:

  • Healing and a sound body

1 Peter 2 v 24: He used his servant body to carry our sins to the cross so we could be rid of sin, free to live the right way. His wounds became your healing. (MSG)

Exodus 15 v 26: Then he said, “I am the LORD your God, and I cure your diseases.”

I can’t possibly outline all the healing scriptures in this post. So I’ll be back in the near future with a post dedicated solely to healing. But as a child of God, you should know healing and a sound body is one of God’s blessings for you.

  • Prosperity

I hope you haven’t bought into the stupid and false claim by some people that God doesn’t want us to be prosperous. Again, they wrongly attribute poverty to humility. How ridiculous is that? How can God invent prosperity and not let any of his children have it? In fact, God’s children are the rightful claimants of prosperity.

We should be more prosperous than the world. But many of us still aren’t because we have not reached out to take it in faith.

Proverbs 3 v 9-10: Honor the LORD by giving him your money and the first part of all your crops. Then you will have more grain and grapes than you will ever need. (CEV)

Proverbs 16 v 3:  Share your plans with the LORD, and you will succeed. (CEV)

Again, as with healing, there are many more scriptures on prosperity. We will address those scriptures soon. In the meantime, feast your eyes on these two, meditate on them, and realize that you are supposed to be prosperous. Prosperity is one of your many rights as a child of God.

  • God’s companionship

You are a child of God, and one of God’s blessings is his eternal companionship. He promises never to leave you. So that means wherever you go, whenever, God is always with you. That doesn’t mean you won’t go through hard times. But when you do, you can count on God’s presence. He’ll walk with you through the most difficult of trials. And if you’ll succumb to his counsel, he’ll see you through those times to victory.

God says whatever happens, don’t quit on him because he’ll never quit on you.

Hebrews 13 v 5: Since God assured us, “I’ll never let you down, never walk off and leave you.” (MSG)

  • A life free of condemnation

Think of all the things you’ve done wrong. Let’s not pretend. We’ve all sinned, committed huge sins. But God forgives us each time, for even the deadliest of sins. God says no sin is big enough for him not to forgive. And he says that when we come before him with our sins and confess them, and then repent, he’s faithful enough to forgive our sins, blot them out of our lives, and make us new again.

2 Corinthians 5 v 17: Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new person. The past is forgotten, and everything is new. (CEV)

God says don’t beat yourself up over your past mistakes. He’s made you so clean that you can boldly stand before people and say I am innocent, I have wronged no man.

So then, because God promises a life free of condemnation, don’t continue to condemn yourself, or let the world condemn you. If you abide in God’s word, he’ll give you the grace to sin no more, then you can boldly stand before the world and say, “I am innocent.”

  • Life

When we talk of a life free of condemnation, free of sickness and disease, free of lack, you might put an emphasis on the last parts of those phrases and overlook the ‘life’ part.

Notice you must have life before you can enjoy all of the above, and life is what God has promised us.

Romans 6 v 23: For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.(KJV)

If you sin, you invite death, plain as that. But if you follow God and obey him, you invite eternal life. Children of God can just reach out and claim the life that our Father has made available to us.

The Final word

The bible says we have everything we need in order to live a life that pleases God. If we please God, obey him, we can have every one of God’s blessings, all of them. If you’ve been deceived into think you are not to be healed or prosperous, or any of the above, then shut that down, push it completely out of your mind. Familiarize yourself with the word because all of God’s blessings are contained in his word. May you enjoy everyone of these blessings and many more. And may God’s peace and joy be with you, in Jesus name, Amen.
