10 easy tips to improve your prayer life

Do you feel like you need to improve your prayer life? Because I feel like that every day. We know we can’t have a relationship with God without prayer because prayer connects us to God. It’s our conversation with God in which we learn of what God wants us to do.

I repeat, you can’t have a relationship with God outside of prayer so you need to make sure your prayer life is sufficient to keep this relationship going. Now, keep reading to learn how to improve your prayer life.

So, if prayer continues to elude you in your relationship with God like that missing piece in the puzzle, please do the following:

  • Tip #1: Tell God about your challenge

Go ahead. Tell God about your challenge. The funny thing is, you are already praying. Yes, by telling God about your challenge, you are communicating with him, and that’s all prayer is.

Jesus Christ already taught us how to pray in Matthew 6 v 9-13. Now, you don’t have to take this prayer in the literal sense and recite it all the time. Jesus was trying to give us an outline of what prayer entails. We have to recognize God as our father, we have to offer praise to him in our prayer, thank him for his presence, provision and the forgiveness of our sins.

Thanksgiving is what strikes me most. Most people have taken prayer to mean a session for asking God for stuff. They complain to God about everything and forget to thank him for everything. So remember to praise God when you tell him about your challenge. You will greatly improve your prayer life by doing that.

  • Tip #2: Be genuine and humble in your prayer

Yes. Pray in the most heartfelt way. Don’t take pride to your prayer because then your prayer will be in vain. Don’t act all self-righteous before God because he might just humble you in a way that will shake for a long time to come.

Seriously, don’t pretend before God. Just be genuine and most importantly humble yourself before him. That will definitely help you improve your prayer life.

  • Tip #3: Listen

Ironic, huh? I’m asking you to talk to God and now I’m telling you to listen? Yes, listen. The mistake most of us make when we pray is that we talk nonstop and don’t give God a chance to say even a single thing.

Prayer is a conversation. And a conversation between two people isn’t about only one person talking. It’s about both people having a chance to say something. So in order to improve your prayer life you’re going to have to keep quiet at some point in your prayer and listen to God. God might just give you the answer you need if you’ll close your mouth for just a minute.

  • Tip #4: Don’t put embellishments on prayer

I have to say this tip would’ve come handy if I’d known about it a long time ago when I was really struggling with my prayer life. I thought prayer was this dramatic event where I had to kneel in front of a cross for hours on end, crying. Now I don’t cry easily, so then prayer seemed impossible.

But that’s not prayer. Prayer is about conversing with God. It can be as short or as long as you need it to be. Don’t think God is impressed with all your talking because he isn’t. Say what you need to say, listen and end your prayer. Of course if you need to talk for hours, go ahead.

But I’m just saying if you want to improve your prayer life, you shouldn’t be worried about the amount of time you spend praying.

Many people continue to be baffled by prayer because they think it must have all these embellishments, the same way they seem to think about meditation. I talk about meditation here, and this post on how to improve your prayer life is similar to the one on meditation.

  • Tip #5: Pray all the time

And I’m not joking. Remember how I just said in Tip #4 that prayer doesn’t need embellishments. So then if prayer is simple, you can and should do it wherever you are, whenever. You can pray as you are working in your office, or riding the bus to work, or cooking in the kitchen, or taking a shower.

You remember the old saying ‘practice makes perfect’ that we roll our eyes at? Well, in prayer this saying works. If you practice praying, you’ll get so used to it that it will become a part and parcel of your life.

A week ago I was with my sister’s 16 month old daughter in the kitchen. I was silently praying in tongues as I washed the dishes. She was really impressed with the sounds I was making because they were eerily similar to the ones she makes all the time, so then she looked up at me and started making those noises too. I know, my niece and I prayed in tongues together.

  • Tip #6: Pray quietly

Another thing that scared me away from praying was that I always heard people hollering and screaming whenever they prayed. They did scary things and I wanted nothing to do with that. I’m not judging them because they might have been moved by the holy spirit.

But I’m saying you can pray quietly and have your prayers answered. You don’t have to shout. In fact, it says in Matthew 6 v 5-8, just before Jesus Christ teaches us how to pray, that prayer is to be done quietly and secretly. You can sit in your corner and pray quietly. God has supernatural hearing and will hear your prayer even when you whisper it, or even when you pray inwardly.

If you want to improve your prayer life, it might be best to practice by praying quietly. But if the holy spirit moves you to shout, then go ahead. It’s all about letting God guide you.

  • Tip #7: Pray with others

This will definitely help you improve your prayer life because you get motivated by others. If you are in a setting saturated with God’s spirit like church, that’s even better for you.

  • Tip#8: Don’t feel forced to pray in tongues

You can pray effectively without speaking in tongues. Praying in tongues is a great thing though, because it lets you communicate with God in a language the devil can’t even begin to understand. It also conveys your prayers on a whole new level. But it’s not a requirement of prayer.

But you will need to learn to pray in tongues for the reasons mentioned above.

  • Tip #9: Pray about the scriptures you read

Every time you finish reading a scripture, pray about it. This will let you have fresh and vivid material to pray about, not to mention it’s perfect practice for you to be able to pray all the time so you can improve your prayer life.

  • Tip #10: Pray for others

In our journey of enjoying a simple healthy lifestyle, we emphasize love beyond self. In order to improve your prayer life you have to pray for others. Pray for your family, your relatives, your friends, your colleagues, your leaders, your government, etc.

Your prayer will definitely help others who might not be able to pray for themselves. Imagine God blessing someone else because of your prayer. Now that’s huge. Praying for others is an act of selflessness that will definitely improve your prayer life.

The final word

You need prayer in order to maintain an intimate relationship with God. And prayer is as simple or hard as you want it to be. The truth is, simple is better and gets your message across to God perfectly. Employ the tips above and improve your prayer life.
